Nur 59 Jahre wurde der Produzent und Regisseur. Sein tragisches Ende fand er in News York nach einer Herzattacke während eines Verwandtenbesuchs.

Neben der "Kevin-Reihe" ist Hughes unter anderem durch Fime wie: "Ferris macht blau", "Ein Ticket für Zwei", "101 Dalmatiner", "Curly Sue - Ein Lockenkopf sorgt für Wirbel", "Manhattan Love Story".Love Story" oder "The Breakfast Club" bekannt geworden.
